West Winging Pluto

Friday, August 25th, 2006

As I said when blogging about Plutons a short while ago the whole Pluto thing really has all the elements of a good West Wing plot. The hijaking of the process to demote Pluto out of the planetary big league after the intelligent compromise that was the Plutons plan was killed off is by itself a plot worthy of the West Wing. Where before I thought Toby wouldn’t care about the situation or would see it as a pointless distraction from serious things I can see him being really upset – he’d now failed a test he passed at the age of 7 because he knew there were 9 planets but now there were 8. It would give him something to be grumpy about. Sam’s hopes would be dashed after he’d enjoyed the new word “Pluton” “Pl-ooo-ton”. CJ would need briefing and would still put her foot in it somehow. Leo would be dealing with a real situation. Josh would be trying to find a way to sort it out. The President would be ridiculing the new definition of a planet because at least 3 other planets in the solar system appear to fail it including Earth.

Plutons

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

I was just reading the BBC article about the three "new" planets in the solar system. I can’t write fanfic to save my life but there would be a great West Wing episode in this somewhere. Something like the episode "Galileo" which by coincidence I watched last night on DVD.

Airforce One Plans

For all those gamers who wondered what airforce one really was like…

Forget Airforce One. Forget The West Wing. Forget NCIS.

See
The Guardian.

Friday Night

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

I was supposed to be meeting some friends and colleagues at the Philharmonic pub in Liverpool on Friday night for a leaving do. Except no one had noticed that Condoleezza Rice was going to the Philharmonic Hall across the road. So we adjourned to a pub further down the hill. This isn’t going to turn into a political blog but there were a few things I saw worth mentioning…

On my way there I noticed news crews filming pieces to camera near some road works. The road works have been there for a couple of weeks and have a couple of weeks to run. They just happen to have really big, solid plastic structures that block the road. Now I didn’t see their reports but call me cynical but given the camera angles and the handily placed protestors it could have been they were attempting to make the road works look like some sort of security barricade.

The demonstration seemed to be noisy but actually quite small. Jack Straw’s comment on the Blackburn Town Hall demonstration “If they had asked me I could have done better for them.” reminded me of an episode of the “West Wing” where Toby tries to explain to a demonstration organiser how to organise a protest so it works.

When the protest broke up some placards were abandoned and then briefly used to make clubs by a couple of ASBO seeking youths. The police clipped their ears (metaphorically speaking) and sent them on their way. If you want to change the world start by cleaning up after your demonstration.

As the demonstration broke up I spotted several people I went to university with who were walking away in the crowd who were dressed like students. Maybe it’s me but it’s over ten years since we graduated maybe its time to move on to new challenges? I wont say they should get a haircut because I need one :-)

Random Thoughts

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006

Can it be a coincidence that “Quantum Leap” and “Life on Mars” both have lead characters called Sam? That both of them appear to be able to travel in time but only in their own lifetimes? Do they both have something they need to put right so they can get home?

Maybe it’s a coincidence. Maybe it’s a conspiracy?

Like the little “The West Wing” and “Yes Minister” using the same fictional country in the Middle East.

Maybe I’m just desperately hoping no one notices I’ve covered up not writing anything today yet because I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my phone and PDA to talk to each other.
