Torchwood: To the Last Man

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Just when I’ve decided to watch just one more episode and if it’s not up to scratch that’ll be it for me and Torchwood they put together an episode like tonights, To the Last Man. No need for aliens, no shooting, no car chases and barely any gadgets. Well told, taught story telling with a lean plot about being human.

Inevitable TV Post

In no particular order:

  • Torchwood Episode 3: Really enjoyed
  • The State Within: Twisty. Interesting. Polished. Really enjoyed
  • Never Mind the Buzzcocks: Wasn’t certain last week. Seems to have found its feet again with new, well, everything

Not the Usual TV Cooking Show

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

Heston Blumenthal: In Search of Perfection isn’t as polished as a Delia or an Oliver. Not as in-yer-face charismatic as a Ramsay or as passionate as a Stein. He sometimes appeared awkward presenting his recipes. This though is a new kind of cooking show. Torchwood joked about CSI Cardiff and the speed of a flying kebab. Well this is the chef to calculate that speed. To perfect the recipe and to have the animated graphics to illustrate it too. Name me another TV cooking show where liquid Nitrogen is an ingredient. You can’t. That’s what makes this show special, new and different. I’m looking forward to the next few Tuesday nights.

Inevitable Torchwood Post

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Robin Hood men in Gap had me worried. I was concerned the creativity, box ticking types had taken over BBC’s new fun drama output. However I liked Torchwood. Epidsode Two may well mean it never gets a mainstream audience in some countries and it isn’t exactly a new idea although the little piles of ash had an amusing quality. Lots of nice little nods to other Science Fiction shows, not just Dr Who. Liked the Silence of the Lambs holding cells. What struck me most was the similarities in the set up to Channel 4′s Ultraviolet. A secret organisation discovered by a regular police officer who is recruited to beef up the investigation side of the outfit. Still a slightly camp, panto take on the concept. With aliens. And dinosaurs.

Looking forward to episode 3.

So I was wrong about Captain Jack…

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

I was wrong about Dr Who bringing Captain Jack back despite the character being confirmed for the Torchwood spin off show later this year. Oh well. I’ll have to watch that now to see how they bring him back from being trapped in the future.

Still we got an inconclusive fight between Daleks and Cybermen that really begs for a rematch sometime. This one came down to The Doctor winning. Also on the plus side what had sounded like a really bad ending in the spoiler I wandered into by accident the other day was handled far better than it read on a BB.
